After the city turned Protestant in 1578, Catholic worship in Amsterdam went indoors: for two centuries it happened in schuilkerken, hidden churches built into the upper floors of ordinary canal houses. That habit of worship happening behind a domestic front never quite left. A good share of the rows here are congregations — English-language churches, diaspora fellowships, meditation groups — that rent a hall or a school on Sunday rather than owning a building. They welcome newcomers at services, but there is nothing to visit on a Tuesday afternoon. Check a congregation's own page before turning up.
