Amsterdam has two kinds of playground. The open ones in parks and squares are simply there. The fenced ones called speeltuinen are often run by a speeltuinvereniging, a neighborhood association of volunteers, with a gate, set opening hours posted at the entrance, and sometimes a clubhouse selling coffee and ice lollies. Hours shrink in winter and some close entirely for part of the week, so check the gate board or the association's page before promising anything. Water is easiest at the nature playgrounds; shade at the ones inside the older parks.
