- Westerkerk — The Protestant church on the Prinsengracht with the tallest tower in the old city, a few doors from the Anne Frank House. Rembrandt is buried here, in a grave whose exact spot is not known. (52.3746, 4.8839)
- Portugese Synagoge — The Sephardic synagogue completed in 1675, still lit by candles in the main hall. Visits are ticketed through the Jewish Cultural Quarter and involve a security check, so leave the large bag at the hotel. (52.3675, 4.9053)
- Fo Guang Shan He Hua Tempel — A Buddhist temple built in traditional Chinese style on the Zeedijk, in the middle of Chinatown. Visitors can step in; keep your voice low and do not photograph people at prayer. (52.3737, 4.9001)
- St Nicholas Carhedral — The large Catholic basilica you see straight ahead as you leave Centraal Station. Open to visitors outside mass times, and a calm ten minutes before or after a train. (52.3742, 4.8964)
- Guru Nanak Gurudwara Sahib — A Sikh gurdwara. As at any gurdwara, cover your head, take your shoes off and wash your hands before entering the prayer hall; visitors are generally welcome to share the communal meal. (52.3908, 4.8490)

Many of these congregations have no building you can walk into
After the city turned Protestant in 1578, Catholic worship in Amsterdam went indoors: for two centuries it happened in schuilkerken, hidden churches built into the upper floors of ordinary canal houses. That habit of worship happening behind a domestic front never quite left. A good share of the rows here are congregations — English-language churches, diaspora fellowships, meditation groups — that rent a hall or a school on Sunday rather than owning a building. They welcome newcomers at services, but there is nothing to visit on a Tuesday afternoon. Check a congregation's own page before turning up.
