The real rock is an hour south, and it hates rain
Every row here is an indoor gym. The outdoor climbing Paris is famous for is Fontainebleau, the sandstone boulder forest around an hour south by train from Gare de Lyon. Its circuits are marked with painted numbers by color, roughly from yellow for easy through orange, blue and red to black for hard, with white circuits for children. The rule that protects the rock: do not climb it wet. Sandstone is weaker when damp and holds snap, so after rain give it a dry day. Spring and autumn are the prime seasons; midsummer friction is poor. In the city gyms, expect to be asked whether you can belay on your own before you use the rope walls.
