If you are carrying film, keep it in your hand luggage and ask for a hand inspection at security. Checked-bag scanners are strong enough to fog it, and more European airports, Rome's included, are moving to CT scanners at the cabin checkpoint that are harder on film than the old machines. A hand check is at the officers' discretion, so keep rolls out of their boxes in a clear bag to make it quick.
