Rome still names its streets after the trades that worked them
Walk the lanes around Campo de' Fiori and the street names are a trade directory: Via dei Giubbonari for jacket-makers, Via dei Chiavari for key-makers, Via dei Funari for rope-makers, Via dei Cestari near the Pantheon for basket-makers, where clerical outfitters now fill the windows. Via Margutta is still the artists' street and Via dei Coronari the antique dealers'. Small workshops often close at lunch and for much of August, and afternoon classes, where they exist, are usually arranged by asking the maker directly rather than booked online.
