- Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia — One of the oldest musical institutions in the world and Rome's main symphony orchestra, which plays its season at the Auditorium. This is the formal night out, and it is the one to book ahead. (41.9296, 12.4737)
- Istituzione Universitaria dei Concerti — A long-running chamber and recital series held in the Aula Magna of the Sapienza university. Good players, a student-city crowd, and usually easier on the wallet than the big halls. (41.9239, 12.4656)
- Accademia Filarmonica Romana — Founded in 1821, and one of the city's historic concert societies, with a programme that mixes chamber music, dance and newer work. Check the season for where each date is held. (41.9166, 12.4740)

Bring ID for the club card, and do not arrive at nine
A lot of Rome's smaller live venues are run as circoli, private members' clubs affiliated to cultural associations such as ARCI. To get in you need the association's card, the tessera, bought at the door on your first visit with photo ID and valid for a year across the affiliated clubs. It is cheap and quick, but without it you will not get in, however good the band. Club gigs rarely start before ten, and in the hot months much of the scene shuts its doors and moves outside to summer festivals.
