The camera at the edge of the old centre
The historic centre is a Zona a Traffico Limitato, a restricted zone guarded by cameras at every entrance. Drive a hire car past a gate while it is active and the fine arrives weeks later, with an admin charge added by the rental firm. On two wheels, Italian law requires a helmet for every rider and passenger on a moped or motorbike, at any age, and the 2024 highway code reform extended the helmet rule to e-scooter riders too. Bicycles need no helmet for adults. Drivers with a licence from outside the EU should carry an International Driving Permit with it.
