Before you go

Bath at a glance

Bath sits in the valley of the River Avon, about 18 km southeast of Bristol. It is named after the baths the Romans built at its hot springs. The city became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, and visitors come for the Roman Baths, the abbey and its Georgian stone terraces.

Known for

  • Roman Baths

Well-preserved Roman bathing complex around the Sacred Spring, begun with a temple built between 60 and 70 AD in the town of Aquae Sulis.

  • Bath Abbey

Parish church and former Benedictine monastery, founded in the 7th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries. It is a leading example of Perpendicular Gothic.

  • Royal Crescent

Sweeping crescent of 30 Georgian terraced houses by John Wood the Younger, built from 1767 to 1774, about 150 m long.

  • Pulteney Bridge

Robert Adam's Palladian bridge over the Avon to Bathwick, completed by 1774. It is one of only four bridges in the world lined with shops on both sides.

  • Bath bun

Sweet milk-dough roll topped with crushed sugar, sometimes with currants or peel; Jane Austen mentioned Bath buns in an 1801 letter.

Getting there

Bath has no airport; the nearest is Bristol Airport (BRS). The A4 Airport Flyer bus runs from the airport to Bath via Brislington, Keynsham and Saltford, up to every hour. By rail, Bath Spa station is on the Great Western Main Line, with Great Western Railway trains to London, Bristol and Cardiff.

Getting around

Central Bath is compact enough to walk between the main sights. First Bus runs city routes and Park and Ride services.

When to go

July and August are warmest, with average highs of about 22 °C. Winters are mild for England, with lows of about 2 to 3 °C. The southwest is generally wetter and milder than the rest of the country.

Local tip

The A4 airport bus runs only up to hourly. Check the Airport Flyer timetable before you land rather than waiting at the stop.
