Before you go

Budapest at a glance

Budapest straddles the Danube, with Buda on the west bank and Pest on the east. Its riverbanks, Castle Quarter and Andrássy Avenue are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors come for the architecture, the river views and the thermal baths fed by over 100 hot springs.

Known for

  • Hungarian Parliament Building Országház

Imre Steindl's riverside building on Kossuth Square, finished in 1904, the largest in Hungary, where the Holy Crown is displayed.

  • Buda Castle and Castle Hill Budavári Palota

Royal palace on the south end of Castle Hill, rebuilt many times since the 13th century. It now holds the National Gallery and Budapest History Museum.

  • Széchenyi Thermal Bath Széchenyi gyógyfürdő

Bath complex in City Park, opened in 1913, with 3 outdoor and 15 indoor pools up to about 38 C.

  • Great Market Hall Nagyvásárcsarnok

Market hall from 1897 at the Pest end of Liberty Bridge, with produce, meats and spices on the ground floor and eateries upstairs. Closed Sundays.

  • Lángos

Deep-fried flatbread, usually topped with sour cream and cheese or rubbed with garlic, sold at markets and street stands.

Getting there

From Liszt Ferenc International Airport, bus 100E runs around the clock to Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér in about 40 minutes. Daytime buses come every 6 to 10 minutes. It needs its own airport ticket. Buy it on board with a contactless bank card. Bus 200E runs 24 hours to Kőbánya-Kispest for metro M3 and takes regular tickets.

Getting around

Four metro lines, trams and buses use the same BKK tickets and passes. Contactless Pay&GO readers work on all metro lines since April 2026. Line M1, opened in 1896, is itself part of the UNESCO listing.

When to go

July and August average highs around 29 C. January averages around 1 C, with lows below freezing, so pack for cold if you come for the outdoor baths in winter.

Local tip

Regular passes are not valid on the 100E airport bus. Buy the airport ticket at the reader by the doors with a contactless card, and board at the front door.
