Before you go

Dublin at a glance

Dublin is Ireland's capital and largest city, on the River Liffey. People come for Trinity College and the Book of Kells, its history and the nightlife of Temple Bar. Henry Street on the Northside and Grafton Street on the Southside are the main shopping streets.

Known for

  • Book of Kells at Trinity College

Illustrated Latin Gospel book made around 800 AD, displayed in Trinity College Library with two pages open at a time.

  • Guinness Storehouse

Seven floors of exhibits at the St. James's Gate Brewery, ending at the Gravity Bar with views over the city.

  • Kilmainham Gaol

Prison built in 1796, now a museum, where leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising were held and executed.

  • Irish stew

Traditional stew of lamb or mutton with potatoes, carrots and onions; many modern versions use beef.

  • Temple Bar

Area of narrow cobbled streets between the Liffey and Dame Street. It is promoted as the city's cultural quarter and is known for nightlife.

Getting there

Dublin Airport (DUB) is about 10 km north of the city center. It has no rail link, so the options are buses, coaches and taxis. Dublin Express coaches run every 7 1/2 minutes to 15+ city stops, including O'Connell Street, Trinity College and Temple Bar. Its fastest service takes about 14 minutes. Aircoach and TFI public bus routes, including 16 and 41, also serve the city.

Getting around

Dublin Bus and the Luas tram serve the city; the Luas Green line and many bus routes stop on O'Connell Street, the main thoroughfare. TFI Leap cards work on public transport.

When to go

June to August is mildest, with highs averaging about 18 to 20 °C. Winters are mild, with highs around 8 to 9 °C.

Local tip

Buy a TFI Leap Visitor Card when you land. Terminal 1 sells it at the convenience store and WHSmith in Arrivals, and Terminal 2 at the SPAR.
