Before you go

Maldives (Malé) at a glance

Malé is the small, dense capital of the Maldives, on the southern edge of North Malé Atoll. A bridge links it to the airport island and the reclaimed island of Hulhumalé. Most travelers pass through on the way to resorts and guesthouse islands in Kaafu Atoll, stopping to see the old coral-stone mosque and eat local food.

Known for

  • Hukuru Miskiy (Malé Friday Mosque)

Seventeenth-century mosque built of coral stone, considered one of the oldest in the country.

  • Medhu Ziyaaraiy

Tomb across the street from the Friday Mosque, linked to the Maldives' conversion to Islam in 1153.

  • Sinamalé Bridge ސިނަމާލެ ފާލަން

The 1.39 km sea bridge, opened in 2018, that joins Malé to the airport island of Hulhulé.

  • Hulhumalé ހުޅުމާލެ

A reclaimed island of about 4 km² next to the airport, with its own public beach and road links to the airport and Malé.

  • Mas huni މަސްހުނި

Breakfast of finely chopped tuna, onion, chili, lime and grated coconut, eaten with roshi flatbread and sweet hot tea.

Getting there

Velana International Airport is on Hulhulé island. The Sinamalé Bridge links it to Malé by road, a causeway links it to Hulhumalé, and buses connect the airport with both. Resort seaplanes leave from the airport's own Seaplane Terminal.

Getting around

Three minibus routes (R10, R11, R12) run through Malé, and larger buses link it with Hulhumalé and the airport. Public ferries run by MTCC serve Villimalé, Hulhumalé, Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu.

When to go

Malé is warm all year, with highs around 30°C. The northeast monsoon, roughly January to March, is the dry season. The southwest monsoon later in the year brings more rain.

Local tip

If you land late or leave early, stay in Hulhumalé. It is joined to the airport by a causeway, so you skip crossing into Malé.

Facts checked November 1, 2026. Transport and openings change, so NUM checks them again.
