Before you go

Mallorca at a glance

Mallorca is the largest Balearic island, in the western Mediterranean off eastern Spain. Palma, the capital, holds most of the population and the Gothic cathedral on the seafront. The Serra de Tramuntana mountains run along the north coast, and beach resorts ring the bays.

Known for

  • Palma Cathedral (La Seu) Catedral de Mallorca (La Seu)

Gothic cathedral on Palma's seafront beside the Almudaina palace, with a rose window nearly 14 m across and a 44 m high nave.

  • Bellver Castle Castell de Bellver

Round 14th-century Gothic castle on a hill about 3 km west of central Palma, now home to the city's history museum.

  • Serra de Tramuntana

Mountain range along the north coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011.

  • Sóller railway Ferrocarril de Sóller

Historic narrow-gauge electric train from Palma to Sóller, winding through 13 tunnels in the Tramuntana.

  • Ensaïmada

Mallorca's spiral sweet bread made with saïm, a kind of reduced pork lard that gives it its name; written records date to the 17th century.

Getting there

Palma de Mallorca Airport is about 8 km east of Palma. EMT bus A1 runs to Plaça d'Espanya, Palma's bus and train hub, in about 20 minutes, then loops on through the center. EMT bus A2 runs along the Playa de Palma from Can Pastilla to s'Arenal. TIB Aerotib buses run to resorts such as Magaluf, Alcúdia and Cala Millor.

Getting around

In Palma, EMT city buses and walking cover the old town. The Estació Intermodal under Plaça d'Espanya serves island buses and TIB trains, and the Sóller railway has its Palma station right next to it.

When to go

Summers are hot, bright and dry. October and November are the wettest months, and autumn storms are not uncommon. Winters are mild on the plains and colder in the Tramuntana, where brief snow is not unusual.

Local tip

Ride the A1 to Plaça d'Espanya rather than the end of the line; the intermodal station and the Sóller train are both there.
