Before you go

Manchester at a glance

Manchester began beside a Roman fort founded around AD 79. With Salford and nearby towns it now forms one of the UK's most populous urban areas. People come for football, its Victorian buildings and libraries, and its museums of science and industry.

Known for

  • John Rylands Library

Late-Victorian neo-Gothic library on Deansgate, opened in 1900 and now part of the University of Manchester, holding medieval manuscripts and special collections.

  • Science and Industry Museum

Museum on Liverpool Road built around the world's first inter-urban passenger railway station, opened in 1830, with displays on transport, power, textiles and computing.

  • Old Trafford

Manchester United's stadium since 1910, the largest club football stadium in the UK, west of the city center by the Old Trafford tram stop.

  • Eccles cake

Small round flaky-pastry turnover filled with currants, from Eccles, now part of the City of Salford.

  • Northern Quarter

City-center area between Piccadilly and Victoria stations, centered on Oldham Street, known for independent and alternative culture.

Getting there

Manchester Airport (MAN) has its own railway station 15.7 km south of Manchester Piccadilly, with eight trains an hour to Piccadilly and beyond. Metrolink trams on the Airport Line run about every 12 minutes to Manchester Victoria in the city center.

Getting around

Metrolink is the largest tram system in the UK, with lines out to the airport, Old Trafford, Altrincham and Bury. Mainline trains use Piccadilly, Oxford Road and Victoria stations.

When to go

June to August is mildest, with highs averaging about 18.5 to 21 °C. Winters are mild, with highs around 7 to 8 °C.

Local tip

Most airport trains start at the airport station, so you can usually find a seat; check the board for the next service to Piccadilly.
