Before you go

Mauritius at a glance

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, with Port Louis as its capital. Most of its people descend from Indian indentured laborers, and Mauritian Creole is the main home language. Visitors come for the coast, the mountain of Le Morne Brabant, colonial-era history and a food culture with strong Indian roots.

Known for

  • Aapravasi Ghat

UNESCO-listed immigration depot on the bay at Port Louis, where almost half a million indentured laborers, mostly from India, arrived.

  • Le Morne Brabant

A 556 m basalt mountain on the southwest tip, a UNESCO site tied to the history of escaped enslaved people.

  • Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanic Garden

Garden at Pamplemousses, about seven miles northeast of Port Louis, often called the oldest in the Southern Hemisphere, with a pond of giant water lilies.

  • Grand Baie

Coastal village on a bay in the north, with La Cuvette Beach, Hindu and Tamil temples, and the La Croisette shopping mall.

  • Dholl puri dalpuri

Flatbread stuffed with yellow split peas, served with big pea curry and tomato sauce, a dish from the island's Indian heritage.

Getting there

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is at Plaine Magnien in the southeast, about 48 km from Port Louis. Public buses leave from the middle of the airport car park: route 198 runs to Port Louis (Victoria Square), and route 9 runs to Curepipe. Both also run the other way to Mahébourg.

Getting around

The Metro Express light rail runs from Port Louis Victoria through Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes and Vacoas to Curepipe. Buses cover the rest of the island.

When to go

June to September is the cooler, dry winter. November to April is the warm, humid summer. Occasional tropical cyclones strike from January to March, usually bringing about three days of heavy rain.

Local tip

At the airport bus stop, check the direction before you board. Routes 198 and 9 also run south to Mahébourg.
