Get the right document, first time
Emergency passport
Report it with Form DS-64, then apply in person at a US embassy or consulate on Form DS-11. If you need to travel before a full passport can arrive, ask for a limited-validity emergency passport, valid for up to a year.

Border rules in Bulgaria
- Bulgaria uses the EU Entry/Exit System: visitors from outside the EU give fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of getting a passport stamp. It has been fully running since 10 April 2026.
- Schengen short stays are capped at 90 days in any 180. ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation, isn’t running yet and has no start date, so there is nothing to apply for.
