Sharjah sits on the Gulf coast directly north of Dubai, ruled by the Al Qasimi family since the early 1700s. It is known as the UAE's cultural capital and was UNESCO World Book Capital in 2019. Getting there
Sharjah International Airport (SHJ) is about 18 km from Al Majaz Waterfront. Sharjah Taxi runs 24 hours from the arrivals stands. Air Arabia coaches link the airport with Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah. Dubai International (DXB) is about 14 km from the center, and many visitors fly in there.
Getting around
Taxis are the main way around the city. The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority runs intercity buses to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Al Ain.
When to go
November to March, when daytime highs rarely pass 30 C. Summer averages 38 to 42 C, sometimes over 45 C in July and August. What little rain falls comes mostly in February and March. Ramadan dates move earlier each year.
Local tip
Alcohol is not served anywhere in Sharjah, including hotels. Plan evenings around the Corniche, Al Majaz Waterfront or Al Qasba canal instead.
