Do you need a visa for Dominican Republic?

The short answerMost visitors don’t need an eVisa for the Dominican Republic: 26 of the 33 passports NUM checks need no visa at all for a short visit. Of the others, 7 need a visa before travelling. There’s an arrival form too: the e-Ticket.

The official link goes to migracion.gob.do. NUM isn’t a government agency or a visa service. Rules change, so confirm on the official site before you pay or travel.

Submit up to 7 days before arrival (FCDO), then show the QR code, digital or printed, at check-in and at the border. It does not replace the tourist card. How entry works

What Dominican Republic checks.

  • Before you go. Visa-exempt visitors need a tourist card, USD 10, included in the airfare for air arrivals. Sea arrivals buy it at the point of entry from the tax authority (DGII). Cruise passengers need one only if staying on land more than 24 hours.
  • Your passport. Standard rule: valid for at least 6 months from arrival (US State Dept, travel.gc.ca). Temporary exemption until 31 Dec 2026: Canadian and British passport holders visiting for tourism may enter with a passport valid for the length of the stay; other purposes still need 6 months. The State Dept page (Aug 2025) mentions no exemption for US citizens. Cruise passengers who come ashore without 6 months' validity pay an escort fee of about USD 125 a day.
  • Onward ticket. A round-trip or onward ticket is required. You can be refused entry without one.
  • Money for the stay. You may have to show enough money for the stay; no amount is published.
  • Travel insurance. Not an entry requirement. The pandemic-era free tourist insurance ended. FCDO advises cover including medical evacuation.
  • At the border. Border officials take fingerprints and a photograph.
  • Also. Land crossings with Haiti are allowed only at the four official points, and you must get entry and exit stamps. Not doing so can bring detention, fines, deportation or a 10-year ban.
  • Also. Visa waiver (Decreto 691-07): foreigners with permanent residence in, or a valid multiple-entry visa from, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or the EU Schengen area can enter for tourism with just a valid passport and a tourist card.

Keep your money

How to spot a copycat visa site.

  1. Check the address. Dominican Republic’s official link on this page goes to migracion.gob.do. Look-alike sites use similar names and flags.
  2. Compare the fee. If the price is far above the government fee, you’re paying a private service. It should say so plainly.
  3. Ignore “fast-track” upsells. Nobody outside the government can speed up or promise a decision.
