Where the concierge points people first
- 노량진시장 — Noryangjin, Seoul's big fish market by the Han River. Choose live seafood from the tanks downstairs, then take it up to a restaurant on the upper floor to be cooked or sliced for a table charge. The wholesale auctions run before dawn. (37.5089, 126.9393)
- 망원시장 — Mangwon Market, a neighbourhood market a short walk from the Han River near Hongdae. Locals do their weekly shop here, and the stalls selling croquettes, fried chicken and rice cakes make it one of the cheapest lunches in the west of the city. (37.5572, 126.9058)
- 서울약령시장 — Seoul Yangnyeongsi, the herbal-medicine market around Jegi-dong. Ginseng, dried roots and medicinal herbs fill whole streets, and you can smell it before you see it. A side of Seoul most visitors never find. (37.5784, 127.0369)
- 황학동벼룩시장 — The Hwanghak-dong flea market near Sindang, where secondhand electronics, film cameras, records and odd antiques spill onto the pavement. Best on a weekend morning, and the place to haggle if anywhere is. (37.5731, 127.0177)
- 중부시장 신중부시장(건어물) — Jungbu Market's dried-seafood halls near Euljiro: anchovies by the crate, dried squid, seaweed and laver. The place to buy gim to take home, at wholesale prices. (37.5654, 127.0004)

Bring cash and an appetite, in that order
Seoul's traditional markets run on cash more than the rest of the city: plenty of stalls take cards now, but the snack stands and the smallest vendors still prefer notes, so carry some won along with your T-money card. Food prices are usually fixed, so save haggling for flea markets. Go early for produce and seafood, and from late afternoon for the snack stalls. At Noryangjin the system is two steps: you pay the fishmonger for the seafood, then the upstairs restaurant charges for cooking it and the side dishes, so ask the price per person before you sit down.
