Where the concierge points people first
- De Peper — A volunteer-run vegan kitchen inside the OT301 cultural centre on the Overtoom. Communal, cheap, organic, and closer to a dinner party than a restaurant. (52.3599, 4.8660)
- Vegan Junk Food Bar — An Amsterdam-born chain of plant-based burgers, loaded fries and bright colours, with three branches in the directory. The easy choice with non-vegan friends. (52.3664, 4.8916)
- Wild & The Moon — A plant-based café from the Paris group, for cold-pressed juice, bowls and a proper lunch without negotiation. (52.3378, 4.8709)
- Maoz Vegetarian — Falafel in pitta with a help-yourself salad bar. Vegetarian rather than fully vegan, but the falafel and most salads are plant-based; ask about the sauces. (52.3649, 4.8841)

The Dutch snacks that catch vegans out
Dutch street food looks more vegan-friendly than it is. Chip-shop mayonnaise contains egg, so ask for a vegan sauce. Stroopwafels are usually made with butter, and poffertjes with milk and egg. The Netherlands is also home to one of the best-known meat-substitute brands, De Vegetarische Slager, so vegetarian bitterballen and croquettes are common on menus — but vegetarian is not always vegan, and the difference is often egg in the coating. If you are unsure, ask for veganistisch rather than vegetarisch.
