A hostal is not a hostel
In Spain a hostal or pensió is a small licensed lodging with private rooms, not a dormitory hostel; the difference matters when you are reading listings. Many occupy one or two floors of an ordinary apartment building, so the front door is a street entrance with a buzzer and the reception is upstairs, often staffed only part of the day. Send your arrival time and ask how you get in if you land late. Catalonia also charges a per-person, per-night tourist tax on top of the room price, often collected at the property, so check whether a quoted rate includes it.
