Visa-free only with an ICAO-compliant ePassport (since 1 Jul 2013). For stays over 15 days get a visa at the Japanese embassy (Thailand is not a JAPAN eVISA residence country; Thais living in a listed eVISA country can apply online there). No work.
How long it must be valid.
Passport must be valid for the whole length of stay; Japan sets no extra validity period (airlines may apply their own stricter rules). If extending your stay, the passport must cover the extension.
