One street does half the work
The Rue des Lombards, by Châtelet, is Paris's jazz street, with several clubs within a few doors of each other, so if one set is full the next door may not be. Most clubs charge per concert rather than per night, and the price depends on who is playing; drinks are on top, and some rooms expect you to order. Many clubs run two sets an evening with a new audience for the second, and the late set is often cheaper and looser. Jam sessions, usually later in the night, are the cheapest way in.
