Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and take your shoes off where others do, usually at the entrance of Hindu temples and Buddhist shrine rooms. Ask before photographing people or the altar, and stay quiet during puja or chanting. Services follow the community's calendar, so arriving early in the day or at a festival shows the temple at its most alive, while midweek afternoons are the calmest time for a quiet look.
