Bicing is not for visitors, and the pavement is not for bikes
Two things catch visitors. First, Bicing stations are everywhere but the scheme is built for residents on an annual subscription, so rent from a shop instead. Second, riding on the pavement is generally prohibited in Barcelona and police do fine for it; use the bike lanes or the road. Shops will want security. Offer a card hold or a cash deposit and never leave your passport, which hotels need to register you and which is hard to replace abroad. Helmets are compulsory by Spanish law for riders under 16; for adults in the city they are optional.
