Num maps 8 climbing spots in Barcelona, mostly bouldering and rope gyms plus the old quarry wall on Montjuïc, and where to go for real rock.
Barcelona's climbing reputation rests on crags outside the city. Montserrat, about an hour inland, is conglomerate rock with long routes and an unusual pebbly texture; Siurana, near Tarragona, is limestone sport climbing of international standing. The season is autumn to spring; south-facing walls are too hot for most of the summer. Gyms will ask new visitors to sign a waiver and, for rope climbing, to show they can belay. Guides and courses for Montserrat can be found through the gyms.
For indoor climbing, Sharma Climbing Barcelona and Freebloc Barcelona; for outdoor routes in the city, Climbat La Foixarda on Montjuïc; for serious rock, Montserrat and Siurana outside the city.
Num's directory maps 8 climbing spots in Barcelona, Esplugues and L'Hospitalet, nearly all of them indoor gyms.
Autumn through spring. Summer heat makes most outdoor walls near the coast too hot until evening.
