Where the concierge points people first
- Badiani Gelato Rosselló — The Barcelona outpost of the Florentine gelateria, on Carrer del Rosselló in the Eixample. Order the Buontalenti, its signature custard-cream flavour. (41.3952, 2.1599)
- Anita Gelato — A chain that began in Tel Aviv, known for a long list of flavours and toppings. More sundae than purist, and good for groups who cannot agree. (41.4002, 2.1572)
- Cosi Duci Gelateria artesana siciliana — In Poblenou, and Sicilian by its own description. Look for the pistachio and the citrus flavours, which are where Sicilian gelato is judged. (41.4038, 2.2036)
- Gelati Dino — Two shops down by Barceloneta in the directory, handy for the walk off the beach. Compare the pistachio colour before you choose. (41.3782, 2.1884)
- Orxateria Sant Roc — Not gelato at all but an orxateria: orxata is the cold tiger-nut milk from Valencia, and in summer it is the other thing Barcelona queues for. Ask for it granizada, half frozen. (41.3750, 2.1452)

Hidden tins beat fluorescent mountains
You can tell a lot from the counter. Gelato made in small batches is often kept in covered steel tins (pozzetti) or in flat trays, and it looks muted: pistachio is brownish green, banana is grey-cream. Tall swirled mountains in bright colours are usually held up with extra stabilisers and air, and bright green pistachio has colouring in it. It is fine to ask whether they make it on the premises; the good shops will tell you, and often point at the back room.
