Ask about the stock, not the meat
In ordinary Catalan and Spanish kitchens a dish can be free of visible meat and still not vegetarian: pulses, rice and vegetable stews are often made with caldo of meat or fish, and a lentil stew may hide chorizo. Ask ¿lleva caldo de carne o pescado? and it will be understood. The weekday menú del día, a fixed lunch with starter, main, dessert and a drink, is where vegetarian places are best value; in the evenings the same kitchens cost more.
