Do you need a visa for Mongolia?

The short answerYes, for some passports: Mongolia has an online option, the Mongolian e-Visa. Of the 33 passports NUM checks, 25 need no visa for a short visit, 7 apply online for the Mongolian e-Visa first and 1 needs a visa before travelling.

The official link goes to evisa.mn. NUM isn’t a government agency or a visa service. Rules change, so confirm on the official site before you pay or travel.

How entry works

What Mongolia checks.

  • Before you go. No authorization applies to all visitors. Nationals of 34 countries (EU states except Germany, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, Switzerland, UK, Australia, New Zealand) are exempt from the tourist visa for up to 30 days under a temporary measure for 2026 (FCDO: until 31 December 2026). Others are visa-exempt under bilateral agreements, or need an e-visa (eligible list on immigration.gov.mn) or an embassy visa.
  • Your passport. At least 6 months' validity from the date of arrival (FCDO, US State Dept; e-visa portal: 180 days). Canada words it as 6 months beyond your expected departure, so allow 6 months beyond departure to be safe.
  • Travel insurance. Not required for entry. Strongly recommended, including medical evacuation, air ambulance and repatriation, because medical services are limited outside Ulaanbaatar.
  • At the border. Biometric data is captured at border control on arrival.
  • Also. Registration: whoever provides your accommodation (hotel, landlord, host) must register you online with the Immigration Agency within 48 hours of arrival (Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Nationals, art. 24.4). Independent travellers or those staying with friends must register themselves online and receive a digital residence permit to carry. The e-visa portal also says to register with the Immigration Agency within 7 working days; Canada says visitors staying more than 30 days must register within 48 hours. The first-pass rule ('register within 7 days for stays over 30 days') is only partly right: the 48-hour host registration applies regardless of stay length.
  • Also. Make sure your passport is stamped on entry, or you may have problems leaving.

Keep your money

How to spot a copycat visa site.

  1. Check the address. Mongolia’s official link on this page goes to evisa.mn. Look-alike sites use similar names and flags.
  2. Compare the fee. If the price is far above the government fee, you’re paying a private service. It should say so plainly.
  3. Ignore “fast-track” upsells. Nobody outside the government can speed up or promise a decision.
