What Nigeria checks.
- Before you go. All non-ECOWAS visitors (except holders of a valid Nigerian residence permit) need a visa obtained before travel, normally an e-Visa; visa on arrival is no longer available.
- Your passport. At least 6 months' validity from the date of arrival (Canada: 6 months beyond expected departure - safest to follow).
- Onward ticket. Return or onward ticket is a standard e-Visa application document.
- Money for the stay. Proof of funds is a standard e-Visa application document.
- Travel insurance. No travel-insurance entry requirement found on FCDO / US State Dept / NIS pages.
- Also. Dual US-Nigerian (and other dual) citizens need a valid Nigerian passport to leave Nigeria.
- Also. Photographing airports, government buildings and military sites is prohibited.

Recent and coming changes in Nigeria.
- 2025-05-01 — Online Landing and Exit Cards became mandatory for all passengers entering or leaving Nigeria.
- 2025 — Visa on arrival discontinued; short-visit visas (tourism, business, visiting, transit) now issued as e-Visas through the NIS portal.
How to spot a copycat visa site.
- Check the address. Nigeria’s official link on this page goes to evisa.immigration.gov.ng. Look-alike sites use similar names and flags.
- Compare the fee. If the price is far above the government fee, you’re paying a private service. It should say so plainly.
- Ignore “fast-track” upsells. Nobody outside the government can speed up or promise a decision.
