The embassies of culture are mostly free, and mostly in the original language
Most of the national institutes in Manhattan — Japanese, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Czech, Austrian, Scandinavian and others — are funded by their home governments to be seen, so a large share of their talks, screenings and gallery shows are free or close to it. The catch is capacity: free events usually need an RSVP on the institute's own site, and the good ones fill days ahead. Language varies by event rather than by building, so read the listing — a Cervantes film night may be Spanish with English subtitles, a lecture next door entirely in Spanish.
