The 9pm to 9am rule
Dog runs in New York are fenced and open by day, but the bigger freedom is courtesy hours: in many large parks, including Central Park and Prospect Park, dogs may be off the lead in designated areas before 9am and after 9pm, and must be leashed the rest of the time. Outside those hours an off-lead dog can mean a fine. Water varies run to run — some have a fountain or spigot, many do not — so carry a bowl and a bottle. Dogs are expected to be licensed and vaccinated.
