Before you go

New York at a glance

The largest city in the United States, built around a harbor and five boroughs. People come for the museums, theater, parks, skyline and neighborhood food. The subway runs 24 hours, so most of it can be seen without a car.

Known for

  • Central Park

An 843-acre park in Manhattan from 59th to 110th Street, designed by Olmsted and Vaux in 1858.

  • Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Reached only by Statue City Cruises ferries from The Battery or Liberty State Park; one ticket covers both islands.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The vast art museum on Fifth Avenue at the edge of Central Park; closed Wednesdays.

  • Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO

The 1883 bridge has a raised walkway over the East River, landing by the DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights waterfront.

  • New York-style pizza

Large, thin, hand-tossed pizza sold by the slice and folded to eat; it grew from Neapolitan immigrant pizza in the early 1900s.

Getting there

From JFK, AirTrain JFK runs to Jamaica (LIRR and E, J, Z subway) or Howard Beach (A train). From LaGuardia, the free Q70 LaGuardia Link bus runs to the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue subway hub. From Newark, AirTrain Newark goes to the airport train station for NJ Transit and Amtrak trains. Licensed taxis and rideshare serve all three.

Getting around

The subway runs 24 hours a day and reaches most places visitors go; buses, ferries and walking fill the gaps. A car is rarely needed.

When to go

Spring (April to May) and fall (September to October) are mild. July and August are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms. Winters are cold, with most snow from December to March. Hurricanes are rare but possible from June to November.

Local tip

For the Statue of Liberty, take the earliest ferry you can. The time on your ticket is when to join the security line, and summer waits can pass an hour.
