Hell's Kitchen is now the busiest strip, not the Village
New York is about as out as a city gets: same-sex couples hold hands on the street in most neighborhoods without a second glance. The Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street, where the 1969 uprising began, still operates as a bar, and the street is part of the Stonewall National Monument. But the busiest cluster of gay bars today is in Hell's Kitchen, on and around Ninth Avenue in the West 40s and 50s, with the piano bars on the East Side and a looser scene in Brooklyn. Pride takes over the city in late June, with the march on the last Sunday of the month.
