Where the concierge points people first
- Dig Inn — A New York-founded chain, now trading simply as Dig, that serves plates of roasted vegetables, grains and a protein. The closest thing to a home-cooked lunch in a Midtown hurry. (40.7804, -73.9548)
- Sweetgreen — The salad chain, with a menu that shifts with the season. Reliable and predictable, which is exactly what some days call for. (40.7298, -73.9920)
- Springbone Kitchen — Built around bone broth, served by the cup, alongside bowls. Useful on a cold day or after a long flight when a salad is the last thing you want. (40.7142, -73.9613)
- Carrot Express — A Miami-born chain with a big menu of wraps, bowls and fresh juices. Pick this when the group cannot agree, since there is something for everyone. (40.7418, -73.9904)
- Baya Bar - Acai & Smoothie Shop — Acai bowls and smoothies, several branches across Manhattan. Breakfast or a snack rather than a meal, whatever the menu says. (40.7251, -73.9517)

The salt-shaker icon tells you more than the word healthy
In New York, restaurant chains with 15 or more outlets in the United States must put a salt-shaker warning icon next to any menu item with more than 2,300 mg of sodium, roughly a day's recommended limit in one dish. They must also post calories. Neither rule applies to a single independent café, however green its sign. So at a chain, read the icons before you order the grain bowl; at an independent, ask what goes in the dressing.
