Do you need a visa for Taiwan?

The short answerMost visitors don’t need an eVisa for Taiwan: 19 of the 32 passports NUM checks need no visa at all for a short visit. Of the others, 11 need a visa before travelling and 2 need a special permit. There’s an arrival form too: the Taiwan Arrival Card.

The official link goes to boca.gov.tw. NUM isn’t a government agency or a visa service. Rules change, so confirm on the official site before you pay or travel.

How entry works

What Taiwan checks.

  • Before you go. None for visa-exempt nationals beyond the online arrival card.
  • Your passport. At least 6 months remaining on the date of entry for visa-exempt and landing-visa entry (US and Japanese passports: valid for the intended stay). Emergency/temporary passports are not accepted for visa-exempt entry.
  • Onward ticket. Confirmed return ticket, or onward ticket plus visa for the next destination, with a confirmed departure seat.
  • Money for the stay. Not generally checked for visa-exempt Western nationals, but required for Thai, Philippine and Bruneian visa-exempt entrants and may be requested by customs/immigration.
  • Travel insurance. Not required for tourists. Digital nomad visitor visa requires full health and hospitalisation insurance for the stay.
  • Also. Visa-exempt entry is refused to people with a criminal record (Smartraveller).
  • Also. Visa-exempt stays cannot be extended or converted except in limited cases (serious illness, natural disaster); UK and Canadian citizens may extend to 180 days.

How to spot a copycat visa site.

  1. Check the address. Taiwan’s official link on this page goes to boca.gov.tw. Look-alike sites use similar names and flags.
  2. Compare the fee. If the price is far above the government fee, you’re paying a private service. It should say so plainly.
  3. Ignore “fast-track” upsells. Nobody outside the government can speed up or promise a decision.
