Most Amsterdam mosques welcome respectful visitors outside prayer times; the quieter hours are mid-morning or mid-afternoon, and Friday midday prayer is the busiest time of the week. Because the city sits at 52 degrees north, prayer times swing widely with the seasons: in June the night prayer can fall after eleven in the evening and the dawn prayer very early. Dress modestly — long trousers or skirt, covered shoulders — and women are usually asked to cover their hair. Shoes come off at the prayer hall.
