Before you go

Taipei at a glance

A basin city of 12 districts, ringed by mountains and surrounded on every side by New Taipei City. People come for the National Palace Museum, working temples like Longshan, night-market food, and metro day trips to the hot springs of Beitou. Most first-time visitors base themselves here and reach the rest of the north by train or bus.

Known for

  • National Palace Museum 國立故宮博物院

In Shilin District; holds nearly 700,000 objects, including the Jadeite Cabbage and Meat-shaped Stone, with displays that rotate.

  • Mengjia Longshan Temple 艋舺龍山寺

Wanhua District temple built in 1738 and still busy with worshippers from early morning.

  • Taipei 101 台北101

The tower that was the world's tallest building when it opened in 2004; observatory near the top and New Year's Eve fireworks off its sides.

  • Night markets 夜市

Raohe Street in Songshan and Shilin are two well-known ones; go hungry and graze stall to stall.

  • Beef noodle soup 牛肉麵

Taipei's signature bowl: braised (red-cooked) or clear broth, thick wheat noodles, chunks of shank.

  • Beitou hot springs 北投溫泉

Geothermal valley in the city's north, reached on the Xinbeitou branch of the metro's red line.

Getting there

From Taoyuan Airport, Airport MRT express trains reach Taipei Main Station in about 35 min from Terminal 1 and about 40 min from Terminal 2. Songshan Airport, for domestic and some regional flights, is inside the city on the Wenhu (brown) metro line. HSR and TRA trains from the rest of Taiwan stop at Taipei Main Station; HSR also stops at Nangang and Banqiao.

Getting around

The Taipei Metro reaches almost every sight; one EasyCard works on metro, buses and YouBike shared bikes. Taxis are plentiful and metered.

When to go

October to December and March to April are the mildest. Summers are hot and humid with afternoon storms, plum rains fall in May and June, and typhoons come roughly July to October. The Taipei Lantern Festival runs for a few weeks around the first full moon of the lunar year (February or March), at venues that change from year to year; Lunar New Year closes many family-run places for several days.

Local tip

No eating, drinking or chewing gum past the fare gates and on trains: the Taipei Metro's no-food rule is enforced with fines, and a sip of water counts.
