A card, a copy, never the passport
Hire shops ask for security, and some will ask to keep a passport. Do not leave it: you need it to check into hotels, which in Italy are required to register your ID, and a lost or held passport can end a trip. Offer a card pre-authorisation, a cash deposit or a photocopy with your driving licence instead; most reputable shops accept one of these. On the rules, Italian law does not make helmets compulsory for adults on an ordinary bicycle, but on any motor scooter or Vespa a helmet is mandatory for everyone. Rome's sampietrini cobbles are hard on thin tyres, so a wider-tyred bike is the better choice.
