The long-distance coaches do not leave from Termini

Rome's buses come in three colours of problem. Orange-and-grey ATAC buses are the city network and take the same time-limited ticket as the metro, bought beforehand at a tabaccheria, newsstand or machine and validated once aboard. Blue COTRAL buses are the regional network for towns in Lazio — Tivoli, the Castelli, the coast — with their own tickets and their own termini at metro stations on the edge of the city. Long-distance coaches to other Italian cities and abroad use the autostazione at Tiburtina. Mixing these up is the classic way to spend an hour on the wrong forecourt.
