- Mercato portaportese 1951 — Porta Portese, the big one, stretching through the streets south of Trastevere every Sunday morning. Many of the rows here are not markets at all but mercatini dell'usato, second-hand shops that work on conto vendita: locals leave furniture, clothes and objects on consignment and take a cut when they sell. They keep normal shop hours, restock every day, and are where Romans actually furnish flats. The open-air markets are the weekend event. At Porta Portese on a Sunday, keep your bag zipped and in front of you, carry cash in small notes, and expect to haggle for anything that is not new.
