For a violin, look for the word liuteria
Italian splits the trade in two. A negozio di strumenti musicali sells instruments, strings and accessories, and the guitar-led ones will usually restring on request. A liuteria is a luthier's workshop, where a liutaio builds and repairs by hand, and it is the only right door for a violin, viola, cello or anything bowed. Many independent shops in Rome close for a long lunch in the early afternoon and some stay shut on Monday mornings, and plenty take a break in August. Phone before crossing the city with a case.
