Inside the big sites, a paid guide needs a licence
In Italy, guiding visitors for money at museums, monuments and archaeological sites is a regulated profession: the guide needs a state qualification as a guida turistica. Licensed guides carry an identity badge, and it is fair to ask to see it. This is why the people selling skip-the-line tours on the street outside the Colosseum and the Vatican are worth avoiding.
