A Tokyo ryokan is often room only
In the countryside, a ryokan stay traditionally includes a multi-course dinner and breakfast in the price. In Tokyo that is the exception. Many of the small family inns on this list are room only, or offer breakfast as an extra, and expect you to eat out in the neighbourhood. Check the plan before you pay, and look for the words 1泊2食 (one night, two meals) if dinner matters. Some rows here are business hotels with Inn in the name; the ryokan are the ones with tatami, futon and a shared bath.
