Summer water play is free, shallow and seasonal
Most of the rows here are 児童遊園 (jidō yūen), small ward-run children's corners with a slide, a sandpit and a bench, often on a plot the size of a house. The bigger parks are where shade lives. In summer, several ward parks open a じゃぶじゃぶ池 (jabu-jabu ike), a shallow paddling pool fed with clean water, free and usually open only for a few weeks around the school holidays. On days the government issues a heatstroke alert, the parks empty out by late morning for good reason; go early or after four.
