In Japan, a place that takes guests for a night or two must hold a hotel-type licence or a private-lodging registration, and ask every foreign visitor without a Japanese address for their passport at check-in. Places that operate as furnished rentals, often sold as monthly mansions, work on short leases instead and usually require at least a month. Some operators offer both routes, so for a stay of four weeks or more ask for the monthly rate: it is often lower per night than the nightly price, with cleaning and bills bundled differently.
