What the law actually asks of you on two wheels and four
Bicycles need no license and no helmet. Scooters are where it gets specific. A bromfiets, with a yellow plate and a 45 km/h limit, needs a moped license and a helmet. A snorfiets, with a blue plate and a 25 km/h limit, has also needed a helmet since 1 January 2023, and in Amsterdam it rides on the road rather than the cycle path on most main routes. Rental firms check licenses at the counter, so ask whether they accept yours before paying. For cars, the city center is best avoided entirely; parking is metered and costly.
