Berlin's large international population has built an English-language comedy scene of real size, with open mics and showcases across Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg most nights of the week. Many of these nights are free to enter and run on a hat at the end: pay what you think the show was worth, and bring cash. German-language Kabarett is a different form, sharper and more political than stand-up, and it assumes fluent German and a fair grip on current affairs.
