Schöneberg was Berlin's gay neighborhood before the word existed
The streets around Nollendorfplatz in Schöneberg were the center of queer Berlin in the 1920s; Christopher Isherwood lived on Nollendorfstraße, and a memorial plaque at the U-Bahn station remembers the gay men persecuted under Nazism. The area is still the heart of it, especially around Motzstraße and Fuggerstraße, where many bars are men-oriented and some keep dress codes or themed nights, so read the door. The Lesbian and Gay City Festival fills these streets each July, shortly before the city's Pride parade.
