Berlin has no rock, so its climbers built their own walls

The nearest real rock to Berlin is the sandstone of Saxon Switzerland, south-east of Dresden, and its rules surprise climbers from elsewhere. Chalk is banned, metal protection such as nuts and cams must not be placed in the rock, and knotted slings are used instead. Climbing on wet sandstone is also forbidden, because the rock loses strength when damp; after rain you wait. Grades use the Saxon scale in Roman numerals. If you plan to climb there, go with someone who knows the area or hire a guide.
